Frequently Asked Questions

This campaign and site are still very new, so not many questions have been "asked frequently" yet. If you have not already done so, we suggest you read The Facts to see if your question is covered. If not, you can ask by email, or simply check back again soon, because we will update this page regularly.

Q: How can I sign the petition?

A: The simplest answer today is: Become a petition circulator! You don't have to gather 100's of signatures to be a circulator. You can even mail in a petition section with just your one signature – though it would be helpful to collect a few more. (Each 4-page section can hold up to 17 signatures.)

As we organize county by county to collect signatures, we will post the details prominently on this site, so check back often. If you can help organize in your county, please let us know!

Q: Where can I read the text of the proposed law?

A: You can review it online here.

Q: Didn't Secretary of State Bowen already solve this problem?

A: California Secretary of State Debra Bowen performed a top-to-bottom review of voting machines used in California, and decertified many machines as a result. We are very happy with what she has done, but we cannot rely soley on a particular Secretary of State to safeguard our vote. The existing law allows an electronic touchscreen to be a ballot, and this is what the Tangible Ballot Initiative will correct.

Moreover, we can reasonably hope that other states will follow California's lead in this area — states with Secretaries of State who do not appreciate the inherent risks of purely electronic voting.

Q: Why a ballot initiative? Couldn't the legislature take care of this?

A: They could. The questions are: Will they? and if so, When? We cannot afford to wait any longer.
